Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakech and one of the most famous landmarks in the Moroccan city. The world famous mosque was built in the 12th century, making it one of the oldest in Morocco. Literally translated, the name of the mosque means “mosque of the book trade”. In the Middle Ages, the Koutoubia Mosque was the spiritual center of the city.

On behalf of Grand Vizier Si Moussa, during the Alawide period in 1867, a magnificent palace of huge proportions was built in the Moroccan city of Marrakech. In the following years, the son of the vizier, Bou Ahmed, extended the palace by a Turkish bath, a so-called Hammam. In addition, Bou Ahmed built a mosque inside the palace walls and created a wonderful, idyllic garden. From now on, he named the complex Bahia Palace, which means “The Radiant One” or “The Splendid One”.
