The Al-Attarine Madrasa is a madrasa in Fes, Morocco, near the Al-Qarawiyyin. It was built by the Marinid sultan Uthman II Abu Said in 1323-5. The madrasa takes its name from the Souk al-Attarine, the spice and perfume market

In a wonderfully restored early-18th-century funduq, the former rooms for travelling merchants are given over to displays of fine woodwork from across Morocco, including doors, prayer beads and musical instruments. Many show the difference between Amazigh traditional styles and the more Andalusian designs of Fez. A highlight are the worn wooden boards used by Quranic recitation students, patched with copper and adorned with their graduation certificates. The rooftop cafe is simple but has great views over the medina.

This is one of the busiest stops on the guided-tour circuit. One of the oldest trades practiced in Fes is that of the copperware craftsmen, and surrounding Seffarine Square — and the source of the noisy clanging and banging — are coppersmiths shaping and polishing all manner of pots, cauldrons, plates, and buckets. It’s best viewed while sipping a mint tea at Cremerie la Place in the northeast corner of the small square.
