Erg Chebbi, known as Merzouga, has majestic sand dunes that may up to 150 meters and cover an area of 50 kilometers from north to south. It is about 60 kilometers south of Erfoud town and 40 kilometers away from Rissani. Due to former caravan routes in this area, Sijilmassa was a prosperous, separate kingdom from the 8th to the 14th century.
