Stop At: Koutoubia Mosque, Rue el Ksour, Derb Sabai, 13, Marrakech 40000 Morocco
The Koutoubia Mosque is Marrakech’s most important mosque and was one of the largest places of worship for followers of Islam when it was completed in 1158. Commissioned by Abd-al-Mu’min, the construction of the Koutoubia began in 1141. The highlights of the mosque are the minaret that stands 226ft (69m) high, which is very similar to the Giralda (bell tower of the Seville Cathedral in Spain), and the color of the temple, made of red stone, which is typical of the region.

Stop At: Bab Agnaou, Rue Oqba Ben Nafaa, Marrakech 40000 Morocco
Bab Agnaou is a monumental gate forming part of the ramparts of Marrakech in the Kasbah district, in Medina. This heritage bears witness to the grandiose past of the Almohade Berber dynasty, which came to power in the 12th century and had its seat in Marrakech. Its Islamic Caliphate extended from Cordoba in Andalusia to Tripoli in Libya. Bab Agnaou is one of the 19 gates that allows you to enter inside the ramparts of the city of Marrakech. This gate (“bab” in Arabic) served as an entrance to the administrative and military complex of the Caliphal Kasbah, citadel of power, from the south of the city. Flanked by two cannons, it is one of the most impressive gates of Marrakech.

Kasbah Mosque is a historical mosque located near the Saadian Tombs in the Kasbah. It is also known as Moulay El Yazid Mosque as it is located on Place Moulay Yazid. Stop At: Mellah, Marrakech Morocco
The Mellah in Marrakech refers to the area where the Jewish community formerly resided. Living in their own separate quarter meant that they were protected in the Kasbah walls, more easily watched and sure enough, taxed by the government. To explore the Mellah, you enter through the Place des Ferblantiers, which was once referred to as the Place de Mellah. The narrow alleys of Mellah lead to landmarks like the Lazama Synagogue, with its tiled courtyard and exhibits on Jewish life, and the tranquil Miaara Jewish cemetery. Nearby are the lively Mellah Market, with meat and produce, and Bab Mellah Spice Souk.

Stop At: El Badi Palace, Ksibat Nhass, Marrakech Morocco
The Badi Palace was built in the 16th century by the Saadian Dynasty. Today the palace preserves its beautiful ruins, where many storks have also chosen to nest. The property is surrounded by a garden of shaded banquet halls, flower gardens, and fountains.
The ruin’s subterranean chambers house two exhibitions, one a photographic history of the Kasbah and Mellah from the 1920s to 1950s – the other an exhibition about the conditions for slaves and prisoners who would have once resided in these underground caverns. Across the vast courtyard, the Khayzuran Pavilion houses temporary contemporary art exhibitions.
Just west of the pavilion, a highlight is the room housing the Koutoubia minbar (prayer pulpit). Once the minbar of the Koutoubia Mosque, its cedar-wood steps with gold and silver calligraphy were the work of 12th-century Cordoban artisans headed by a man named Aziz (the Metropolitan Museum of Art restoration surfaced his signature).

Stop At: Bahia palace entrance, Rue Riad Zitoun el Jdid, Marrakesh 40000, Morocco
Sandwiched between the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), the Medina (the old city), and the Kasbah (where the royal employees once lived) is the Bahia Palace. Close to 150 elaborate rooms make up the palace, and this includes a large harem section next to the Court of Honor.
It’s completely empty. Admire the woodwork, the tiles, and bring a healthy dose of imagination to think of how it might have once looked.
When you visit, be on the lookout for the courtyard, gardens, and architecture. The courtyard has a white Carrara marble floor with water features. The gardens have a mix of orange blossoms and an extensive vegetable garden. The architecture has a mix of both Andalusian and Moorish style.
