Stop At: Taourirt Kasbah, Avenue Mohammed V, Ouarzazate 45000 Morocco
Located in Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert as it is nicknamed, the Taourirt kasbah is the symbol of the city. Its construction dates from the 17th century. This Berber building reveals one of the most beautiful examples of Berber architecture in the city. It adjoins the medina and imposes by its gigantic walls. It served as a palace in the Pasha of Marrakech, Thami El Glaoui. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Taourirt Kasbah is made of earth, straw and lime and becomes fragile over time. The Kasbah is only partially visited, you can admire the dining room and private apartments. The richness of the interior decorations contrasts with the sobriety of the exterior decorations. The Glaoui had transformed part of the Ksar (fortified village) into a magnificent Kasbah. He lived there with his family until 1956. Since the kasbah was bought by the city of Ouarzazate and is partly renovated.
