The Saadian dynasty, known for their lineage as sharifs (descendants of Muhammad), constructed the madrasa following a style established during the earlier Marinid period. It could accommodate over 800 students and functioned until 1960 before being refurbished and reopened to the public as a historical site in 1982. It closed for restoration again in November 2018 and reopened in April 2021.
