This day trip travels east of Marrakech into the foothills of the High Atlas to the Cascades d’Ouzoud. Our first stop is usually at Demnate, a Berber market town. Sunday is a hive of activity on market day and a visit to the rural market is fascinating.
A short drive from Demnate is Imi n’Ifri, a natural arch-shaped land bridge in the M’goun Geopark. Imi n’Ifri in Berber means ‘the grotto’s mouth’. A stepped trail leads down to a river bed and into the ‘mouth’ under the land bridge. Shoes with good grip are essential as it can be slippery. We continue to the Berber town of Azilal (market day is Thursday). From here we drive a scenic (and little-used) back route to Ouzoud, through the Western High Atlas National Park.
Arriving at Ouzoud we’ll meet our local guide and explore the falls area. The best way to experience the 110m high falls is to follow the trail through the olive groves on the west side down to the El Abid river.
