The mosque’s minaret has been standing guard over the old city since the Almohads erected it in the 12th century. Today it’s Marrakesh’s most famous landmark. The tower is a monumental cheat sheet of Moorish ornament: scalloped keystone arches, jagged merlon crenelations and mathematically pleasing proportions.

The Koutoubia Mosque, with its 12th-century 250ft-high minaret, is an iconic architectural muse, inspiring the Giralda in Seville and Le Tour Hassan in Rabat. Unlike Middle Eastern mosques with domed minarets, Koutoubia’s square design is an Amazigh trademark. Inside, a ramp rather than stairs allows the muezzin to ascend on horseback for the call to prayer. The minaret’s spire, once adorned with gold balls, now features brass balls filled with special mineral salt from the High Atlas Mountains, preventing oxidation. Legend says Sultan Yacoub Al Mansour’s wife melted her jewelry to create the golden balls as penance for breaking Ramadan fast. The salt is replaced yearly during Ramadan to maintain the spire’s shine. A wooden stick in front of the spire points towards Mecca and holds flags on religious holidays. The ruins of the original prayer hall lie northwest of the minaret, believed to have collapsed during the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

The Bahia Palace is an ancient palace that goes back to 19th century wherein, that palace used to be the official residency of the Vizier wife Mrs. Bahia. Jammaa El Fnah is considered a world heritage square, where oral and popular culture looms large. There are acrobats, snake charmers, juice sellers, dancers, fortune tellers, street gamblers etc ….. Jammaa El Fna means execution square, and also means the vast square. Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, Rabat are all deemed to be imperial and historical cities of Morocco. Marrakech is worth visiting as it has lots to offer and you can enjoy your time between its old medina’s streets and alleyways. The city of Marrakech has old medina, former Jewish quarter, and a Kasbah which means a citadel or fortress.

The Marrakech Museum, located in the historic Dar Menebhi Palace in the medina, offers visitors a rich experience of Moroccan culture through its diverse collection of traditional artifacts, contemporary art, and Islamic art. The museum’s beautiful Andalusian architecture, with its ornate courtyards and intricate tile work, is a highlight in itself. Additionally, temporary exhibitions and cultural events, such as music performances and workshops, provide a dynamic and immersive cultural experience.

In the Synagogue section of the Marrakech Museum of Jewish Culture, visitors can see beautifully adorned Torah scrolls, an ornate Ark (Aron Kodesh) for storing the scrolls, an intricately carved Bimah (raised platform), a collection of prayer books and religious texts, traditional synagogue furnishings like benches and chandeliers, various religious artifacts such as menorahs and Shabbat candlesticks, and the distinctive architectural features of Moroccan synagogues.
