Meknes was constructed during the early days of the present dynasty and served as the nation's initial capital. After decades of anarchy, this city emerged as the first capital of a united Morocco. The fact that a Portuguese captive was responsible for designing the iconic gate Bab Mansour was a show of defiance to the European powers that were at the time. This captive was employed by Sultan Moulay Ismail as an architect, and he was also responsible for creating the Sahrij Souani Bassin and the underground jail.
