Rano Kau - I Love Morocco

Rano Kau

Half Day Private Tour: Rano Kau and Orongo the City of Kings

On this tour you will be able to visit the mythical ceremonial city of Orongo, where the Tangata Manu (Bird Man) competition was held, which consisted of jumping into the sea from a cliff and bringing a manutara egg to the shore. Whoever achieved it became the new king of Rapa Nui for a year, until the next competition. You will visit the incredible crater of the Rano Kau volcano and enjoy its beautiful landscape. In Vinapu, several theories are discovered, which suggest the possible arrival and influence of the Incas since time immemorial.

Rano Kau: Trek Around the Crater Rim

Trek along the edge of Rano Kau, one of the three extinct volcanoes of Rapa Nui. Moisture accumulates inside, creating a favorable microclimate for cultivation. There is a great diversity of native vegetation that surprises: bananas, tubers, and other edible species that make us think of ancient human occupations. It is considered that the manavai, an ancient system of cultivation of circular holes, protected by a stone wall, was inspired by the craters of volcanoes such as Rano Kau. When you reach the end of the route, you will find one of the most impressive settings on the island, the great crater of Rano Kau next to the 3 main islets of Rapa Nui.

Rano Kau and Orongo: Half Day Private Tour

One of the most important sites on Rapa Nui is the Rano Kau volcano: a massive caldera with a freshwater lake and breathtaking views from multiple angles. This half day tour starts at the right time to avoid the busy hours and try to give you a more intimate experience in these legendary landscapes. The Ceremonial Village of Orongo was the capital of the Bird Cult and Birdman competition ceremonies every spring during the later stages of Rapa Nui's history. We move slowly along the trail enjoying amazing views and stopping to hear new insights about the island's heritage and history. Private service only with limited availability. Due to new regulations all visits to Orongo Ceremonial Village are subject to wind conditions.
